Monday, October 21, 2013

Richard Harris Richard Harris

A survey of more than 5,000 companies tracking and forecasting the impact of mobile apps and platforms in enterprise found that secure mobile activations are driving mobile enterprise activities.

The survey, Mobility Index Report Q2 and Q3 2013, was conducted by Good Technologiesand is part of an ongoing initiative to track global mobility trends and usage patterns as they relate to enterprise IT.

The report showed that total secure mobile app activations rose nearly 42 percent quarter from Q2 to Q3. The rate of growth for secure mobile apps by companies was far greater than the growth rate of mobile device deployments, indicating that enterprises are looking to leverage the investments they’ve already made in mobile to maximize utilization.

While Android is gaining enterprise market share on the device side, iOS dominates as platform of choice for enterprise app deployment, with 98 percent and 95 percent of total app activations in Q2 and Q3 respectively.

Document editing comes out on top as the largest single commercial app category securing 56 percent of the activations. This category, which remains the clear leader as business is largely run on documents, continues to experience strong growth, achieving a 45 percent increase over Q2. File access and syncing are a strong second with almost 20 percent of all activations.

While iOS dominates as platform of choice for enterprise app deployment, Android app enterprise app deployment is experiencing a much more significant growth rate. The number of total Android app activations nearly tripled from Q2 to Q3.

For device activations, 72 percent of total device activations in Q3 were iOS, with Q2 at 69 percent. Android finished at 30 percent and 27 percent of device activations for Q2 and Q3, respectively. Windows Phone activations made up one percent of total device activations in both quarters. This is an increase in total Windows activations seen in the previous two quarters, and equal to the percentage of total activations seen in Q2 of 2012.

Tablets are the most popular device for mobile app usage, with 81 percent of applications activated in Q3. Of the apps activated on tablets, 91 percent were document editing apps, followed by file access and custom applications. The manufacturing industry recorded tremendous growth quarter over quarter with 32 percent increase in share of iPad activations.
