HiPEAC 2024 conference to focus on edge AI

Friday, January 12, 2024

Richard Harris Richard Harris

The HiPEAC conference will take place on January 17th-19th in Munich, Germany. There will be around 600 experts sharing insights into edge AI, the future of cloud computing, HPC, and the HiPEAC Vision 2024 will be presented along with 11 tutorials, and three keynotes, plus the ACM TACO paper track.

Bringing computing systems together from all over the world, the nineteenth edition of the HiPEAC conference will take place in Munich on 17-19 January 2024. A highlight of the European computing systems' community calendar, the event offers both unparalleled networking opportunities and the chance to identify priorities for future directions in the field. This year, the computing continuum and edge AI are central themes, complementing the conference's traditional focus on high-performance and embedded architecture and compilation.

'As an engineering hub with a rich academic tradition, Munich is a natural location for the HiPEAC conference. This year's program is a guide to the key trends in computing systems from across the computing continuum, with sessions on the latest machine-learning architectures, advances in neuromorphic and quantum computing as they move to the integration stage, made-in-Europe HPC, and the latest research on real-time, safety-critical systems," says HiPEAC 2024 General Chair Diana Gohringer (TU Dresden).

"With registrations reaching near-record levels, the enduring appeal of the HiPEAC conference is once again clear. Alongside longstanding topics such as performance and energy, the HiPEAC conference offers an opportunity to reflect upon themes affecting the whole computing systems community, such as sustainability," adds HiPEAC Coordinator Koen De Bosschere (Ghent University).

HiPEAC 2024 will kick off on Wednesday, 17 January with a keynote talk by Reetuparna Das (University of Michigan) exploring how genomics applications drive systems research. Lieven Eeckhout (Ghent University) will start Thursday's talks with a keynote on sustainable computing systems. Following this, Jan Komarek, policy officer at the European Commission, will give a talk outlining policy directions relevant to the computing community. On Friday, 19 January, the final keynote talk, by RIKEN's Mitsuhisa Sato, will discuss the design of the legendary 'Fugaku' supercomputer and challenges for post-exascale computing.

The conference will also see the launch of the HiPEAC Vision 2024, a fresh, dynamic edition of HiPEAC's take on the future of computing systems. This will be presented in a dedicated session on Thursday, 18 January.

As in previous years, the program offers a comprehensive exploration of computing systems at all levels of the computing stack and spans the spectrum from edge devices to HPC installations. In addition to the main paper track, a total of 33 workshops and 11 tutorials will present advances in computing research, offer hands-on sessions with the latest technology, and provide opportunities to take up project results. Tours of the Leibniz Supercomputer Centre are also available.

  • The nineteenth edition of the HiPEAC conference, the network's flagship networking event, will take place on 17-19 January 2024 in Munich, Germany.
  • Around 600 experts will come together to share insights into the future of computing systems, from edge to cloud to high-performance computing (HPC), with the computing continuum and edge AI forming a key focus.
  • Sponsorship is at record levels, and once again the sold-out industry exhibition and industry session will feature technology companies from start-ups to multinationals.
  • The HiPEAC Vision 2024 will be presented at one of the conference's 33 workshops, which make up a diverse program along with 11 tutorials, three keynote talks, and the ACM TACO paper track.

Highlights include:

  • Coordinating the computing continuum in workshops such as CODECO, CAFC, and CompContinuum, which will consider aspects such as orchestration, modularity, scalability, and flexibility - also key themes in the HiPEAC Vision 2024. Meanwhile, the DISCOVER-US workshop will introduce attendees to a new EU-US collaboration project focusing on the edge-cloud computing continuum, distributed computing, and swarm intelligence, with funded research exchanges available.
  • Innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge - another priority area identified by the HiPEAC Vision 2024 - in the NeuroEdge, Driving Next-Gen Edge AI Technologies, DL4IoT, and AccML workshops.
  • The latest in European high-performance computing (HPC) architecture and applications, plus updates on the quest for technological sovereignty, showcased in the CONCERTO, EuroHPC, RISC-V, Towards Reliable Digital Twin, IO-SEA, European HPC Systems Towards Exascale, Classical HPC & QC, RED-SEA, Plasma Physics Towards the ExaScale Era and EVEREST + DAPHNE workshops.

The conference will once again feature a STEM Student Day, with an expanded program and extra activities for students. Student participants - who get free access to the full conference on the day - will have the chance to meet representatives from some of the most exciting companies in technology, along with the opportunity to submit CVs to the virtual jobs fair and arrange interviews with participating companies. They will also be able to learn from student experiences in the Reproducibility Student Challenge and hear first-hand from industry representatives about what it's like to work at their companies in the 'Inspiring Futures' careers session.

Once again, the conference has broken sponsorship records and will welcome returning sponsors along with new companies, especially those local to Munich. Among the sponsors in the exhibition and industry session are household names such as AMD, Huawei, Arm, Bosch, and HPE, as well as sector specialists including Cloudian, Scaletorch.AI, and Tasking. For the full list, see the HiPEAC24 conference homepage. View the program on the HiPEAC24 website, note that you can filter sessions by topic.
