Security concerns will be front and center in 2021

Clyde Seepersad from The Linux Foundation, predicts security concerns will rise in 2021, more so when it comes to cloud native applications.

Security concerns, especially when it comes to cloud native applications, will be even more front and center in 2021 than they have been recently, said Linux Foundation SVP & General Manager of Training & Certification Clyde Seepersad.

Recent research by The Linux Foundation and Harvard found that open source developers are not prioritizing security issues nearly as much as they should, and that will need to change as we see cloud adoption accelerate and more sophisticated attacks occur, like we recently saw with the massive SolarWinds hack. This will require upskilling around security issues to ensure development teams have the skills necessary to ensure applications are secure.

"Additionally, we see WebAssembly really taking off this year. As the fourth 'official language' of the web, WebAssembly offers a secure, fast and efficient compilation target for a wide range of modern programming languages, allowing them to target the browser. With applications in blockchain, serverless, edge/IoT, and other emerging technologies, more and more developers will be adopting this technology and taking advantage of the benefits it provides."

Clyde Seepersad is responsible for the training and certification arms of The Linux Foundation. The goal of the team is to provide high-quality training and skills development to the open source community. Over the past decade Clyde has held senior leadership positions in the education space, most recently as head of operations at 360training.com and before that as a senior executive of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a global leader in education.
