A new independent analysis takes a closer look at the electricity use and environmental impact tied to one of the most widely used conversational AI tools. The findings suggest that serving today’s massive volume of daily prompts now requires energy on the scale of a small nation, with emissions comparable to a large fleet of vehicles.

The report breaks down how those figures were estimated, why usage patterns and product changes matter for energy demand, and what practical steps could help manage the impact without slowing innovation.

At its core, the analysis focuses on how many prompts the chatbot handles and how much electricity is required to process them. It looks specifically at inference, the compute behind each user request, and translates that into estimated power usage across the global server infrastructure running the model. Daily totals are then scaled to an annual footprint and compared against familiar benchmarks to make the numbers easier to understand.

Usage continues to climb even as criticism grows

Following OpenAI’s controversial deal with the U.S. Pentagon, a boycott movement has begun to take shape, with reports suggesting around 700,000 users have canceled subscriptions or switched to alternatives. Even so, ChatGPT remains one of the most widely used AI tools, with an estimated 1.2 to 1.5 billion monthly users.

Despite growing criticism and the emergence of movements like QuitGPT, usage continues at a scale that carries significant environmental weight. New feature rollouts, including a desktop “super app” and potential adult-oriented modes, add further demand. Each added capability increases the computational work required per request, pushing electricity consumption higher.

The analysis suggests the system may be handling up to 3.2 billion queries per day. Meeting that demand would require roughly 60.7 gigawatt hours of electricity daily. Over a full year, that scales to approximately 22.15 terawatt hours, comparable to the annual electricity consumption of countries like Croatia or Slovakia.

Using a standard grid emissions factor, that level of consumption corresponds to an estimated 5.98 million tons of CO2 per year. In simpler terms, that is roughly equivalent to the annual emissions of about 1.3 million passenger vehicles. While not a perfect comparison, it provides a relatable sense of scale.

Why features and model size matter

Energy demand in AI inference comes down to three main factors.

First is volume. More prompts mean more server time and higher overall power usage.
Second is complexity. Larger models, longer context windows, and multimodal features like image, audio, and video processing increase the compute required per request.
Third is infrastructure efficiency. Data center design, hardware choices, and cooling systems all influence how much electricity is needed to deliver that compute.

As product capabilities expand, sustained growth in both usage and complexity puts upward pressure on total energy demand unless offset by efficiency gains.

How the estimates were built

To estimate the impact, the analysis combined multiple indicators of user activity and translated prompt volumes into approximate compute requirements. Conservative assumptions were applied around server efficiency and data center overhead.

From there, daily energy usage was calculated, annualized, and converted into emissions using a blended grid factor. Supporting calculations and assumptions are available upon request for those who want to examine the methodology more closely.

What this means for businesses and the public

For businesses deploying AI at scale, energy consumption is becoming a practical design consideration. Model selection, context limits, and feature defaults can all meaningfully affect total power usage.

For everyday users, awareness can translate into small but meaningful choices, such as limiting unnecessary sessions or opting for lighter-weight tools when appropriate.

Reducing impact without losing capability

There is no single solution, but a combination of practical steps can help.

Providers can improve inference efficiency, better manage idle capacity, and route workloads to regions with cleaner energy where possible. Renewable energy sourcing and energy storage can further reduce overall emissions.

Product teams can design with efficiency in mind, using shorter default contexts, limiting heavy media features when unnecessary, and caching repeated queries.

Organizations and users can also play a role by reserving the most powerful models for high-value tasks and using lighter alternatives for routine work.

Transparency into ChatGPT Carbon Footprint and next steps

Greater transparency around energy use and emissions will be key moving forward. The analysis points to the need for clearer reporting, including energy intensity ranges and regional grid exposure.

As more data becomes available, these estimates will likely evolve. For now, the report offers a grounded look at the scale of modern AI usage and what it may cost beyond just compute.
