The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever App Launches with Hardcover Companion

Posted on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

In the days of 'everything digital' it's a bit refreshing to see an author take the approach of creating a story for everyone to read on paper, and an app to go along with it that offers a new perspective on interacting with a story.

The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever is a unique way for individuals, families and artists of all backgrounds to explore the Old Testament of the Bible and make their own versions of the illustrations. Now available for review in hardcover and as an eLuminated app (eLume) for iPads.

Early Praise for The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever

Winner of two 2013 Moonbeam Children’s Awards

“Wonderfully original . . . an ambitious offering, successfully accomplished” Booklist (starred review)

“Gorgeous … a new delight for all” -- Jane Ciabattari, National Book Critics Circle “This beautiful, brilliant work of art is a book to open again and again.” Jewish Book World (starred review)

“Sophisticated art—mobile, offbeat, tactile, and enticing—supports the text.” Association of Jewish Libraries

“Morse’s scholarship and appreciation for the Bible is obvious, and he does a masterful job of making readers part of the story.” Publishers Weekly

The first of its kind, The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever is part fine art and part biblical scholarship. Steeped in the author’s knowledge of biblical criticism, it retells the story from an inclusive perspective, using collage to dynamize the multi-textured history. Expressive collages accessible to all ethnicities bring the imaginative abridgment to life. Narration by English actress Allison Hancock is warm and never patronizing.

Activate the audio by tapping the Hebrew letter symbolizing God—discovered in a different place on each page. Explore the pulldown menu to learn the original context of the stories and find paper credits that read like fashion captions. Social media features invite discussion and recommendation, while “Make It Yourself” templates allow artists of all ages to create their own versions of the illustrations at home.

Orson & Co’s award-winning apps honor the integrity of reading. Founded by an artist and a storyteller, Orson believes the possibilities of iOS touchscreen devices should bring the reader deeper into the story, not distract from it. The combination of text, sound, and image in The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever will engage the contemporary imagination without parents feeling like they have just given their child a video game.

Benjamin Morse (Author)  is available for interview and appearances to discuss:

  • The book’s inspiration and evolution · The experience and purpose of crafting in paper … and then going digital
  • The Bible’s relevance in the age of Kabbalah and in a pluralistic society
  • How biblical scholarship informs this unique retelling
  • How his work makes religion more accessible and universal
  • The next title in The Bible Beautiful Series.
