Google is turning on the Restore feature soon

Posted on Thursday, January 10, 2019 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

In a recent email sent to Android developers that have subscriptions enabled, Google wants to remind you that soon they will be activating the Restore feature. The email read:

"We are writing to let you know about an upcoming change to the Restore feature in the Google Play Console. On April 15, 2019, Google will be turning on the Restore feature for all developers with subscriptions enabled to ensure a more consistent user experience. If you already have Restore enabled, then you will not be impacted.

The Restore feature enables users to resume auto-renewals before the subscription expires. Learn more about the Restore feature.

Action required

While many subscriptions developers will not need to do any engineering work to integrate the Restore functionality, we highly recommend that you test Restore before this date to ensure that you can properly handle restorations.

To make the transition easier, Google has enabled Restore for all license test accounts. Learn more about testing for subscriptions.
If you need to make any code changes, and are unable to complete them before April 15, 2019, you can opt-out by unchecking "Allow users to restore subscriptions in Google Play" in the Play Console. Opting-out will give you more time to ensure that Restore behaves correctly in your app, and you can opt-in after you have completed any necessary changes.
You can opt-out after the change takes effect on April 15, 2019.
You can opt-in at any time.
The checkbox can be found in Store Presence > In-app products > Subscription settings.
This feature works best if you've set up Real-time Developer Notifications. Learn more about handling events such as Restore through Real-time Developer Notifications by reading our documentation and checking out our sample code."
