Android has unveiled a new on-device surface called Collections, designed to showcase personalized content and enhance user engagement beyond the Play Store. This feature, first teased at this year's Google I/O, is powered by the Engage SDK and aims to extend app discovery by offering a seamless user experience.
Collections is a full-screen immersive space that organizes relevant content from installed apps into intent-oriented categories such as Watch, Listen, Shop, and Social. This setup allows users to deep-link directly into the apps for a continuous experience, whether it's enjoying content or completing a purchase. For users with an app installed but not logged in, Collections can encourage them to sign in for personalized content. Additionally, if an app is integrated but not installed, Collections can suggest its installation. New feature highlights include:
Collections offers several ways to engage users, including continuation journeys and recommendation clusters. These journeys help users resume activities such as picking up an abandoned shopping cart or jumping back into a recently played album. Developers can also create up to five recommendation clusters, tailored to user behavior, to highlight new releases, price drops, or favorite topics. For those not logged in, broader appeal content can be provided to spur engagement.
The feature also includes a premium UI template for hero content in its featured cluster. This space can display personalized promotions and deals, such as membership offers or new product announcements, dynamically updated throughout the day.
To utilize Collections, developers need to integrate the Engage SDK, a client-side integration that typically takes about a week to complete. The SDK allows apps to push personalized content to Collections without needing a new content strategy. Already, over 35 top apps, including Adidas, Amazon Prime Video, and Spotify, have integrated with the SDK.
Android invites all eligible apps in the United States to explore this new feature. For more information and to see if your app meets the requirements, visit the Engage SDK integration guide: https://developer.android.com/guide/playcore/engage
