AI Audit tool launched by Cloudflare for content creators

Posted on Saturday, September 28, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

Cloudflare, Inc., the connectivity cloud company, announced the launch of AI Audit, a suite of tools designed to help websites of all sizes analyze and manage how their content is utilized by artificial intelligence (AI) models. This initiative enables website and content creators to quickly understand how AI model providers are using their content and to control whether and how these models can access it. Additionally, Cloudflare is developing a feature that allows content creators to set a fair price for their content used by AI companies for model training and retrieval augmented generation (RAG).

Cloudflare helps content creators regain control of their content from AI bots with AI Audit tool

Many website owners - including for-profit companies, media outlets, and small personal sites - may be unaware that various AI bots are scanning their content thousands of times daily, often without compensation, leading to significant value loss for businesses of all sizes. Even when website owners are aware of AI bot usage, they often lack sophisticated methods to determine which scans to allow and how to act on this information. For the continued benefit of diverse online content, content creators require tools to reclaim control.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, emphasized the need for collective decision-making regarding the future of online content in light of AI advancements. He stated, "Content creators and website owners of all sizes deserve to own and have control over their content. If they don’t, the quality of online information will deteriorate or be locked exclusively behind paywalls. With Cloudflare's scale and global infrastructure, we believe we can provide the tools and set the standards to give websites, publishers, and content creators control and fair compensation for their contribution to the Internet, while still enabling AI model providers to innovate."

With new tools to automatically control how AI bots can access content, Cloudflare is the first to stand up for content creators at scale

With AI Audit, Cloudflare aims to facilitate a transparent exchange between websites seeking greater control over their content and AI model providers in need of new data sources. Key features of the announcement include:

  1. Automatic Control Over AI Bots: Website owners can block all AI bots with a single click, providing a straightforward solution for those lacking the resources or expertise to manage bot traffic.

  2. Access to Analytics: All sites using Cloudflare will gain insights into how and when AI models access their content, enabling differentiation between various types of bots.

  3. Enhanced Rights Protection: The AI Audit tab will offer advanced analytics to help site owners negotiate with model providers and protect their rights through modeled terms of use.

  4. Fair Pricing for Content Access: In development, a feature will streamline the process for content creators to set prices for their content, making it easier for AI model providers to access fresh content while ensuring that creators are compensated.

Existing Cloudflare customers can access the AI Tab from their dashboard to review analytics and manage bot activity immediately. Site owners interested in the beta for price-setting capabilities can join a waitlist.
