Reflecting on the evolution of mobile apps, many pinpoint the launch of the iPhone in 2007, or the debut of the App Store in 2008, as pivotal moments. However, I think back to 2004, the year Facebook emerged and subsequently dominated the app landscape for two decades. Today, Meta's big three - WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook - are among the top five most popular apps globally, underscoring the centrality of content and communication in human interaction.
However, none of these leading apps has evolved into the West’s first true category-defining ‘Super App’. A new 'Super App' is set to emerge very near future - possibly in 2024. Asia has already given rise to 'Super Apps' like WeChat, Kakao, and Grab, a phenomenon yet to be seen elsewhere in the world. The race is now on, with contenders like X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Revolut vying to take the lead. This development will mark a significant shift in how we integrate technology into our daily lives, reflecting a blend of communication, lifestyle, and financial services within a single platform.
