Mobile Makers Academy has announced the launch of a new scholarship program to attract women and people of color to the mobile technology industry.
Mobile Makers will offer up to $2500 as tuition assistance to applicants who are underrepresented, either by gender or ethnicity, in the sector. To qualify, all prospective students must complete an admission interview and demonstrate a passion to learn coding. Previous development experience is not required.
Mobile Makers is an iOS-specific
bootcamp designed to teach beginners how to make iPhone and iPad apps and to become mobile developers. The tuition assistance is one part of Mobile Makers’ mission to grow a more diverse tech workforce and to prepare people for careers in iOS mobile development.
Last year, the academy co-created DiversiTech312, a networking and speed mentoring event for women and people of color who are interested in working in technology.
“Demand for mobile app developers is growing. Yet we continue to see women, ethnic minorities and other groups underrepresented in this field,” said Brandon Passley, co-founder and CEO of Mobile Makers. “By offering scholarships, we can lower one barrier to entry and promote awareness about opportunities in mobile technology.”

The Mobile Makers Academy prepares people to be mobile developers, teaching them how to make iPhone and iPad apps. The program simulates a professional application-development environment with independent and team-based coding, guided by expert developers.
Unlike other iOS courses, Mobile Makers offers personal, on-site instruction, practice technical interviews, a private job board and resources for alumni to continue enhancing their skills and portfolio. The academy, headquartered in Chicago, attracts applicants from across the U.S. as well as from Mexico, Canada, India, the United Kingdom, Venezuela and New Zealand.
