In a step towards its goal of convincing mobile providers to utilize its operating system, Jolla Mobile has announced its Sailfish OS is now compatible with the Android ecosystem in terms of application and hardware compatibility.

With eyes towards the European and Asian markets, the company is hoping that the OS’s ability to fully integrate current Android apps including Instagram, WhatsApp and Spotify will spur its adoption.

Sailfish is a Linux-based mobile operating system based on MeeGo OS and Mer and was developed by the Jolla for use in its upcoming smartphones. The company announced preorders for its Jolla smartphone earlier this year, although no date for the phone’s release or details on available carriers is currently available.
