There is some serious cheese out there for developers to compete for in the $4 million (US funds) Tizen App Challenge. Developers can compete for 54 prizes in nine categories.
Backed by Samsung Electronics and Intel, the Tizen operating system is an HTML5 environment created to compete with other app ecosystems. In a related story, CNET reports that Samsung has delayed the debut of its first Tizen phone to the last quarter of 2013 (see related news posting in our Mobile Tech section).
Winners in the Games category will receive the following prizes: Grand Prize - $200,000US (one per category), Runner Up - $100,000US (two per category), Honorable Mention - $40,000US (three per category). Game categories include action, adventure, arcade, sports, role playing, strategy, board, card/casino, puzzle, word/trivia, music, and others.
Winners in the Non-Games category will receive the following prizes: Grand Prize - $120,000US (one per category), Runner Up - $600,000US (two per category), Honorable Mention - $30,000 US (three per category). Non-Games categories include productivity, finance, utilities, education, reference, kids, music/video, entertainment, photo, font, news/magazine, sports, weather, social networking, lifestyle, health, travel, and navigation.
The winners will be selected by a panel of judges and the top 10 ranked HTML5 apps will be eligible for an added $50,000 prize.
Developers have until November 1, 2013 to enter apps and the winners announced in December 2013.
