UK bets big on 5G architecture

In a report named the Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), the UK government has expressed its intentions to become one of the forbearers of the new 5G technology architecture. Rolling out a plan to push forward plans that would transform the mobile network landscape of the UK and make it a technological leader in Europe.

In the FTIR, Jeremy Write, Secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports, said:

“We want to ensure that the UK has the strongest conditions in place to secure the investment we need. To do this, as we move from a part fiber, part copper roll out to a full fiber and 5G rollout, we will make sure that competition and innovation can thrive. This means regulation that is limited to where it is necessary and provides the longer-term stability and predictability that investors need.
The UK must become the easiest and the most attractive place to invest in new digital infrastructure.”

The FTIR advocates that the nation substantial increase future funding for the 5G telecommunications architecture, begin making the transition to a future with full fiber networks, and reduce legal restrictions in order to make the new technologies as cheap as possible. Which is why the paper says that the UK Government has launched a new task force named the “Barrier Busting Task Force,” tasked “with the single objective of reducing the cost of building fiber networks by identifying and removing barriers to their deployment.” A task force designed to lower the bar of entry for new innovative companies to flourish in the UK in order to further their future ambitions of technological improvement.

“Digital infrastructure is central to the future of the UK economy. This national strategy will create the right market and policy conditions to secure world-class connectivity for all, but it needs to be accompanied by changes from within the sector. The industry has a critical role in delivering the world-class connectivity we need, and the focus should be on growing the market and improving consumer experiences. This is a long-term strategy and one which will only be achieved by government and industry working together.” finished Jeremy Write in his Ministerial Foreword.
