Missouri STEM camps begin registration for summer 2024

Missouri University of Science and Technology opened registration for the 2024 summer camp season on Friday morning, with even more camp options for elementary, middle school and high school students.

Building on its record-breaking 2023 season, S&T is offering many new camps in 2024, including Innovations in STEM, Outdoor World: Urban vs Rural, Mining the Mind, eSports Boot Camp and Sound of Miners, an orchestra camp. Many of the camps, including Movie Makers, Art in the Ozarks, Leading for Tomorrow, Mining the Mind and eSports Boot Camp, will explore the connections that link STEM with nearly every academic discipline.

Alongside its new offerings, long-time favorites such as robotics, Jackling Introduction to Engineering and explosives are also open for registration.

“Our camps are designed to inspire, educate, and inform about science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, but they are also tons of fun,” says Courtney Jones, director of S&T’s Kummer Center for STEM Education. “Depending on the camp, campers will stay busy doing things like learning how to safely blow up things, launching rockets and satellites, and exploring Ozarks flora and fauna. When each camp ends, we want every camper to have a better idea of what STEM is and to be aware of the academic and career opportunities in STEM-related fields.”

Camps run June 2 to July 27, 2024, and are open to students in grades 4-12. Twenty-nine camp sessions covering at least 25 STEM-related topic areas are currently scheduled. Twenty-seven camps are residential, with a minimum two-night stay at the S&T campus in Rolla; there is also a day camp, a night camp and two residential camps that will camp at S&T’s Ozark Research Field Station. Outdoor World: Urban vs. Rural Camp will take place both on the S&T campus and at the field station, where campers will experience the bridge between urban planning and rural sustainability.

“Our summer camp experiences use hands-on learning and exploration to inspire skill development and career exploration through interactive projects, experiments, and activities that go beyond traditional classroom settings,” said Dr. Michelle Pipes, director of summer camp operations. “We offer our campers the gift of innovation and creativity, encouraging them to think outside the box and develop solutions to real-world challenges.”

Parents and guardians are encouraged to register and apply as early as possible for scholarships. Information about scholarships must be requested while completing the camp registration form.  Scholarships are awarded in the order in which the application is received. In 2023, the STEM Center awarded full or partial scholarships to all who applied, a tradition it plans to continue in 2024.
