Microsoft Provides Windows COPPA Support for App Advertising to Kids

Posted on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 by STUART PARKERSON, Global Sales

Microsoft is releasing COPPA support in its Dev Center to help developers define how to manage ads in apps whose primary audience is children.

Beginning in September, developers can indicate if their app targets children under 13 as defined in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If a developer selects this option, Microsoft will disable its behavioral advertising services when delivering advertising to the app. If a developer’s app is directed at children under the age of 13, they should select this option in the ‘Monetize” section in Dev Center.

While the COPPA rules have not been in the forefront of app development news recently (the legislation was enacted in July 2013), it is important for publishers of kids apps to make sure they follow the rules. Here is a good developer centric overview of the COPPA regulations.
