Mendix is a rapid application development company which recently published a report addressing “App Delivery Chasm.” The challenges today concerning a lack of developers which may cause a backlog of distributing apps within the enterprise are real. The new report indicates what really is going on with the current landscape.

MassHousing CIO Charles Schiappa stated the following “The App Delivery Chasm is a very real challenge facing CIOs and their teams. With more and more demand from our business, the only way out of this hole is to change the paradigm and deliver applications in a drastically faster, more collaborative way. With the help of Mendix, we’ve taken projects from years of planning and development effort to complete solutions delivered in weeks, with business stakeholders and users much more engaged in the process.”

The facts derived from the “App Delivery Chasm” findings indicate that CIOs and IT leaders cannot keep up with the growing business demand for app development. According to the Mendix survey, 71% of IT organizations say they can’t keep up with demand for business apps.·The data also showed that 78 % of companies lack sufficient tools for enabling business-level developers to build apps.

The survey was based on key findings from the completed results of of nearly 500 global IT and business executives. Mendix states that the research found that demand for custom business applications is growing rapidly, fueled by digital transformation initiatives. Specifically, customer-facing and mobile apps were in strong demand, cited by 69 percent and 75 percent of respondents respectively.

Pressures of today include organizations abilities to innovate faster. This elevated urgency requirement spurs the need for more application development, more adjustments, the need to increase app delivery project involvement levels and delivery of shorter turnarounds. Mendix indicates that nearly three-quarters of organizations fail to consistently meet project success criteria, such as delivering on time, on budget, meeting business requirements and generating business value.

Despite the challenges, there are benefits in which organizations can still be successful. According to the insights, there were key factors in which successful organizations stood out from their peers. Mendix indicated three important findings to this which include: implementing an application strategy, involving the business and modernizing the development environment.
