Jolla, the Finnish smartphone and Sailfish OS developer, has announced that Jolla’s Sailfish operating system has reached release 1.0 and is now ready for global distribution. Jolla is also introducing availability of the Sailfish OS as downloadable software to devices running Android.
Jolla hopes that the uniqueness of the
Sailfish OS as a gesture-based mobile operating system will win over users. The OS supports both native Sailfish OS apps and Android apps. Jolla has concentrated on the availability and interoperability of Android apps in Sailfish OS so that users can install their preferred Android app store and access Android apps.
Jolla will release the downloadable Sailfish OS in phases during the first half of 2014. First, the UI launcher application will be released so users can start to experience the Sailfish user interface in their existing devices running Android. Later Android smartphone users can get the full Sailfish OS to their devices.
On the hardware front, the first Jolla phones were sold in Finland in late November last year. Now Jolla is looking to expand its smartphone reach into new markets, and is working to launch the phone in the Europe as well as targeting partners in Russia, India and Hong Kong for online sales.
