IoT Mobybased container engine from resin.io launches

Posted on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 by CHRISTIAN HARGRAVE, Publishing Editor

Resin.io is releasing balena, a Moby-based container engine designed for IoT and embedded use cases. The new balena container engine is 3.5x more compact than Docker Community Edition and is 10-70 times more bandwidth efficient in container updates. It leaves out datacenter-oriented features of Docker and adds functionality for running Docker containers on resource-constrained devices across multiple architectures including ARM v5, 6, 7, 8, i32, amd64 and Intel Quark CPUs. These features include true container deltas calculated with a full binary diff, atomic and durable image pulling to protect updates in event of power failure, and improvements for operating with constrained memory.

Resin.io helps developers address the challenges of building, deploying and maintaining IoT devices in the field. With the announcement of the Moby project earlier this year, the resin.io team saw an opportunity to leverage experience supporting millions of hours of production IoT deployments to provide the Docker community with an assembly optimized for embedded applications, or any scenario where space, storage, and durability are a concern.
