Google Labs launches Opal

Google Labs recently announced the release of Opal, an experimental tool designed to make creating AI-powered mini-applications more accessible than ever. Developed by a team including Senior Product Manager Ali Modarres, Staff Research Scientist Bill Byrne, and Staff Software Engineer Paul Lewis, Opal empowers users to build, prototype, and share functional AI apps without writing any code.

Google Labs launches Opal: A new tool to build and share AI mini-apps

Currently available in public beta for U.S.-based users, Opal allows individuals to connect prompts, AI models, and external tools using natural language and visual workflows. The launch is part of Google’s broader initiative to bring experimental AI development capabilities into the hands of developers, creators, and teams looking to streamline their productivity or test AI concepts quickly.

No-Code AI workflows and visual editing

Opal enables users to construct multi-step applications using a combination of natural language instructions and visual tools. These workflows represent the sequence of operations a user might need to complete a task. Users can describe their logic in plain language, and Opal translates it into a visual interface that can be edited and refined in real time.

The platform also offers flexible editing modes. Users can modify steps within their workflows by either interacting with the visual editor or by providing conversational instructions. This hybrid system makes it easy to customize prompts, integrate tools, or insert new logic into existing flows.

Built for sharing and iteration

Once a mini-app is built, Opal provides straightforward sharing features. Developers can publish their apps for others to use, allowing collaborators or broader audiences to interact with them through their Google accounts. This encourages knowledge sharing, experimentation, and collaborative AI development.

To support new users, Opal includes a demo gallery featuring starter templates. These pre-made apps serve as jumping-off points for customization and learning. Users can either run them as-is or remix them to better suit their needs.

A tool for innovators

Google Labs designed Opal to serve a range of use cases, from accelerating the prototyping of AI solutions to enabling business users to build tools that enhance their workflows. The tool lowers the barrier to entry for AI development, targeting not only software engineers but also designers, analysts, educators, and other creators interested in integrating AI into their work.

Opal is positioned as part of Google’s ongoing exploration of user-empowered AI. The company hopes to gather feedback and insights during this beta phase to inform future iterations of the tool.

With Opal now live in public beta, Google Labs invites developers, innovators, and enthusiasts to start building, exploring, and sharing their own AI-driven applications.
