Google App Translation Service Moves Past Pilot Phase to General Availability

Posted on Monday, November 11, 2013 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

Google has announced that its App Translation Service, which was first previewed at this year’s Google I/O conference, has moved past the pilot stage into general availability for all developers.

The service allows developers to purchase professional app translations through the Google Play Developer Console. To use the App Translation Service, developers will want to first read the localization checklist and make sure their APK is ready for translation, and select the languages to target for translation.

For developers who are unsure about which languages to select, the Google Play team has suggestions to help identify opportunities. First, review the Statistics section in the Developer Console to see where an app already has users. Indications an app should be translated include a significant number of installs in a certain country where the app hasn’t been localized. If similar apps are popular in a country where an app isn’t available yet, that also could be indication localization make sense.
