Chrome 29 Beta Brings Web Audio and WebRTC in Chrome for Android

Posted on Saturday, July 27, 2013 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

In Chrome 29 Beta Google has released several new Chrome Apps APIs and new features on Chrome for Android. Significant updates include Android support for the Web Audio API for processing and synthesizing audio and WebRTC, the real-time communication API.

The Web Audio API is a high-level JavaScript API for processing and synthesizing audio to allow web developers to implement professional-quality audio production apps and modern game audio engines. The beta version extends the availability of the Android. For the initial beta release on Android, the feature is only exposed on ARM devices that support NEON optimizations.

Also extended to Android in beta is WebRTC, which enables real-time communication such as videoconferencing in the browser. It consists of three independent components: getUserMedia, which provides access to the user’s webcam and microphone; PeerConnection, which sets up calls with the ability to traverse NATs and firewalls; and DataChannels, which establishes peer-to-peer data communication between browsers.
