AI developer tools and build cycles in 2025

Posted on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 by AUSTIN HARRIS, Global Sales

Devang Shah, Vice President and Practice Leader for Cloud Technologies at WinWire Technologies Inc., offers his insights into the transformative shifts expected in software development by 2025. In this article, he shares his predictions on emerging trends such as AI integration, DevOps evolution, and the rise of low-code platforms, highlighting the skills developers will need to succeed in this rapidly evolving landscape.

The software development landscape is entering a transformative phase as we approach 2025, with significant changes expected across tools, processes, and team structures. Let's examine the key trends and predictions that will shape the industry.

AI developer tools and build cycles

We will see a wider adoption of AI developer tools for the build cycles. While AI coding assistants are already elevating developer workflows, these tools will be extended further into areas of code reviews, testing automation along with software planning cycles. Application Maintenance will be another area where lot of things will be automated from currency/version upgrades to updating out of life software and SDKs, performing bug fixes, and testing for compatibility with different devices and channels.

DevOps evolution and automation

DevOps and Automation have already come along a long way, however, in the coming year, we will see integration of these tools into Ops side of the house - automated monitoring and recovery. This will complete the entire Ops lifecycle and will be instrumental in helping companies, deploy and manage, secure workloads.

Low-code platform advancements

Integration with AI will be the biggest thing we will see in low-code platforms. This will help accelerate development cycles. We will finally see business citizen developers building more sophisticated business applications with these developments. This will also help accelerate innovation cycles as citizen developers will be able to prototype ideas much faster.

IoT integration and innovation

There will be a lot of R&D and exploration in this space as this offers the next big wave of innovation. Leveraging smaller LLMs to enable smart devices across industries can offer significant ROI and user experience benefits. To this end, we will see the ecosystem around integration further evolve with lots of tooling available.

Essential developer skills and emerging roles

Developers will have to upskill themselves with Generative AI skills for application development. They will have to leverage AI assistants to increase the velocity, and this will be more of a "normal" than a "nice to have". Developers will need skills for leveraging AI across the entire project life cycle - from innovation to build, deploy, monitor, and operate.

We will also see newer roles coming into the mix - Prompt Engineers, Technical BAs, etc. Lastly, it will be imperative to have mix of security and responsible AI skills to ensure safe and secure adoption of AI.

As we look ahead to 2025, these developments signal a significant shift in how software is developed, maintained, and evolved. Organizations and developers who embrace these changes while maintaining a focus on security and responsible development practices will be best positioned to succeed in this rapidly evolving landscape.
