Todd Anglin, VP of Product Strategy of
Telerik's Platform, Progress Software has written his personal insights on some of the latest trends we are expected to see in 2015. Anglin points out growing areas such as Wearables, IoT, Cloud, aaS (as a Service), Developer languages and more will become further adopted by mobile users and enterprises.
- Wearables: Apple Watch will start to make wearables mainstream (beyond fitness), as it is clear that Apple hopes to deliver a device that is a natural extension of the smartphone. This will force a new generation of apps to the forefront.
According to Gartner, “Phones and wearable devices are now part of an expanded computing environment that includes such things as consumer electronics and connected screens in the workplace and public space,” but “increasingly, it's the overall environment that will need to adapt to the requirements of the mobile user.”
- Buzz words: “IoT' will be an even HOTTER buzzword of 2015; “Cloud” will start to cool, as will the “aaS” (as a Service) categories. More specifically, connected home will become increasingly mainstream, with Apple’s HomeKit and Google’s Nest/Dropcam helping lead the way.
According to Gartner, “the combination of data streams and services created by digitizing everything creates four basic usage models – manage, monetize, operate and extend,” but enterprises should think beyond these four models in order to leverage IoT beyond just assets and machines.
- Dev languages: Developers will start to re-form focused technology “cliques” as polyglot fatigue sets in. Devs are sick of new options for programming languages and will look for consolidation.
- Analytics: iBeacons will become very common in retail, but will struggle to find traction in other industries.
iBeacon will be a good source of analytics for retail stores but according to Gartner, “organizations need to manage how best to filter the huge amounts of data coming from the IoT, social media and wearable devices, and then deliver exactly the right information to the right person, at the right time.”
- Windows: Windows 10 will help bring more people back around to Microsoft’s professional Surface tablets. Windows Phone will continue to struggle to gain any noticeable share in the face of strong Android “L” and iOS 8 performance/sales.
