Weird name, cool prizes. If you developing for Windows Phone you might as well get as much swag as possible and you might just do so with new announcements from DVLUP, the developer loyalty program from Nokia.

DVLUP uses a gamification model to create a competitive environment to build Windows Phone apps. Developers can earn badges and experience points (known as “XP”) by completing quizzes and challenges related to application development. By creating “high-quality applications” as determined by DVLUP, developers can also earn additional points and have even greater chances to earn stuff.

The main rewards are promotional opportunities from Microsoft and Nokia. For instance, developers can promote their applications through the Windows Phone Store, App Social, in-app advertising, as well as by using print, digital, social and out-of-home media opportunities.

There are three main app promotion categories/types of campaigns eligible as rewards:

Merchandising - to provide an opportunity to spotlight an app in key consumer app discovery channels. These include spotlights in App Social in five countries, and Windows Phone Store spotlight placement in 5 countries as well as global placement. There may be additional country specific app promotional products available in the future.

Marketing - to promote quality apps in consumer marketing channels. For instance, developers will be able to select app marketing offers to promote apps via the Nokia USA Twitter and Facebook channels, as well as Nokia.com site placement.

Advertising - so developers can promote apps via in-app advertising. At launch, rewards can be used to buy in-app advertising campaigns with AdDuplex.

Developers can also earn merchandise including gift cards, Nokia phones and more.

There are several new challenges that have been announced recently and run through December. One challenge, in combination with the Nokia Create Competition, will award the winner with a free trip to next year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

DVLUP is available in more than 20 countries including Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Poland, United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam, with more countries being added regularly.
