This week marks the commencement of the 2024 Summer Olympics (officially branded as Paris 2024), a worldwide sporting spectacle featuring more than 200 nations. As athletes prepare to demonstrate their skills, numerous innovative solutions developed in the fields of AI, Internet of Things, 3D Printing and others are transforming the way athletes train and perform and are likely to make a significant impact in this year's Olympics, according to Technology Foresights, an innovation intelligence platform by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Game changing innovations powering Olympics 2024, reveals GlobalData’s Technology Foresights

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has partnered with Intel, Atos, Alibaba, and other technology players to implement several solutions such as the use of digital twins for efficient energy management, AI for processing feed from multiple cameras for broadcasting, and automated online abuse detection for safeguarding athletes. Beyond these, several other innovations are disrupting the sports industry.

Innovation radar - Technology-led innovations in sports

Sourabh Nyalkalkar, Practice Head of Innovation Products at GlobalData, comments: "GlobalData’s innovation radar for the sports industry reveals how disruptive technologies are transforming every aspect of gameplay. From highly customized 3D-printed footwear to high-precision sensors and sophisticated algorithms for gait monitoring. Some of these innovations such as breathable fabrics are widely adopted in the industry while others are picking up pace, as indicated by signals from GlobalData's alternative datasets."

The development of these innovations is not concentrated on technology companies alone. An in-depth analysis of the innovation landscape reveals a larger participation by sports industry players and several healthtech companies. The growing competitive landscape is underscored by the fact that nearly $6 billion in venture capital has been invested in the sports and gaming industry since 2020 according to GlobalData's deals database.

There have been multiple technology-driven acquisitions too. Most notable are Lululemon’s acquisition of Curioser Products, better known as Mirror, in 2020 and Nike’s acquisition of Datalogue, a data and analytics company, in 2021.

Nyalkalkar continues: "Athletic monitoring sensors is one of the innovations projected to be highly impactful according to Technology Foresights. These wearable sensors track various aspects of athletes' performance, physiology, and physical condition during activities. The data collected is used to provide real-time feedback to athletes and coaches, helping optimize training, improve performance, and prevent injuries."

"The involvement of major sports brands like Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas among leading innovators in this innovation highlights the importance of this technology. Competing with tech giants like Apple and Google, as well as specialized fitness companies like Fitbit and Garmin, these brands leverage extensive data on athletic performance to stay ahead."

Sensors for monitoring athletic performances and wearables for physiological monitoring are among the innovations making their debut in this year's Olympics. In the run-up to the mega event, Nike revealed a series of 3D-printed footwear branded as Nike on Athlete-Imagined Revolution (A.I.R). Adidas too has introduced a new range of breathable fabrics using microfiber technology on this occasion.

Nyalkalkar concludes: "As we witness the convergence of sports and technology at the Olympics, innovation will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of athletics. From enhancing performance to improving safety and spectator experience, these technological advancements are not just changing the game - they are redefining it. As we look beyond the Paris Olympics, we can expect even more groundbreaking developments that will push the boundaries of human potential and transform the world of sports as we know it."
