Health care AI is improving speed and accuracy of medical diagnoses

Artificial intelligence (AI) in health care—often described as augmented intelligence—is increasingly regarded as a valuable support system rather than a disruptive force. A recent survey by the American Medical Association (AMA) highlights that physicians are showing growing confidence in AI’s role within clinical practice, even as they remain cautious of potential challenges. These technologies are being adopted to streamline administrative tasks, enhance clinical decision-making, and enable more personalized patient care.

AI applications in health care analyze large volumes of patient data, helping identify patterns and insights that may be difficult for clinicians to detect manually. From reviewing medical imaging to supporting complex diagnostic decisions, AI aims to complement physicians' expertise rather than replace it.

Growing physician interest in health care AI

The AMA's 2024 survey on augmented intelligence highlights a notable increase in physician engagement with AI. The proportion of physicians whose enthusiasm for health AI exceeded their concerns rose to 35% in 2024 from 30% in 2023. Meanwhile, physicians whose concerns outweighed their enthusiasm decreased to 25% from 29% over the same period. Roughly 40% of physicians remain equally excited and concerned about AI, indicating a balanced approach to adoption.

Survey respondents emphasized that AI has the potential to reduce administrative burdens, improve diagnostic accuracy, and support more personalized treatment plans. “Physicians are increasingly intrigued by the assistive role of health AI," said AMA Immediate Past President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H. “However, there remain unresolved concerns around design, privacy, integration with EHR systems, and potential liability issues."

Current usage and opportunities

In 2024, about three in five physicians (66%) reported actively using AI in their practice, a significant increase from 38% in 2023. Additionally, 68% of physicians indicated they see definite or some advantage to using AI tools, slightly up from 65% in the previous year.

The most commonly cited opportunity for AI was addressing administrative burdens through automation, reported by 57% of physicians. By taking over routine documentation and workflow tasks, AI allows physicians to spend more time on direct patient care, ultimately improving efficiency and patient satisfaction.

Other areas of application include supporting diagnostic evaluations, analyzing medical images, and recommending treatment options based on patient-specific data. While these applications show promise, physicians note that effective integration with existing electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential for usability and adoption.

Physician concerns and adoption factors

Despite growing enthusiasm, the AMA survey highlights ongoing physician concerns. Data privacy, accuracy of AI recommendations, integration with clinical systems, and potential liability remain top issues. Physicians identified several key attributes necessary to advance adoption:

Designated feedback channels for reporting errors or issues (88%)

Data privacy assurances to protect patient information (87%)

EHR integration for seamless workflow (84%)

In the previous year, physicians prioritized privacy assurances, liability protection for AI errors, and medical liability coverage. These shifts indicate a continued emphasis on trust, accountability, and safe implementation of AI medical technologies.

By supporting physicians in making faster and more reliable decisions, health care AI is improving speed and accuracy of medical diagnoses.

AI algorithms can analyze large datasets—including patient records, lab results, and imaging studies—at speeds unattainable by human clinicians alone. This capability can enhance early detection of conditions, improve treatment planning, and support evidence-based decision-making.

Studies show that AI-assisted diagnostic tools can complement physicians' judgment by flagging potential issues that may be missed in traditional evaluations. For instance, AI can help identify subtle patterns in imaging data, highlight unusual lab results, or suggest treatment options aligned with patient-specific characteristics.

Responsible implementation and oversight

The AMA continues to advocate for responsible, ethical, and transparent deployment of AI in health care. Their principles emphasize patient safety, quality, and unbiased decision-making as core priorities. Increased oversight, proper validation of AI tools, and clinician training are critical to ensuring AI contributes positively to clinical practice.

Physicians also stress the importance of maintaining human oversight in AI-assisted care. While AI can enhance diagnostic and administrative processes, the ultimate responsibility for patient care remains with the clinician. Proper guidance, continuous monitoring, and feedback channels are necessary to build trust and ensure safe use.

Looking to the future

The adoption of AI in health care is expected to grow steadily in the coming years. Institutions are focusing on integrating AI into clinical workflows, training clinicians to use AI tools effectively, and developing standards for ethical and safe implementation. By improving the speed and accuracy of medical diagnoses and reducing administrative burdens, health care AI has the potential to enhance overall patient care and support physicians in making more informed decisions.
