Fedora 25 releases

Posted on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

The Fedora Project have announced the general availability of Fedora 25, the latest version of the free and open sourceFedora operating system. As with previous Fedora releases, Fedora 25 is available in three distinct editions: Fedora 25 Workstation, Fedora 25 Server and, replacing Fedora Cloud, Fedora 25 Atomic Host.

Key new features and enhancements to Fedora 25 include:

- For the first time, Fedora 25 Workstation includes decoding support for the MP3 media format.

- Wayland is now the default display server for Fedora 25 Workstation, replacing the legacy X11 system.

- The upgrade path for Fedora users is now simplified, with users able to start the process from the GNOME Software tool and the entire process taking about 30 minutes.

- Fedora 25 Server now includes an SELinux Troubleshooter model for Cockpit, allowing users to more easily determine how to handle SELinux denials.

The newest addition to Fedora, Fedora 25 Atomic Host provides an operating system optimized for creating and deploying container-based applications. It's refreshed on a two-week release cycle (major releases will coincide with new Fedora versions) to help users keep pace with the rapid innovation inherent to the Linux container world. A Fedora Cloud Base image will remain available as well.
