Developer Survey, a cross platform study

Posted on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

Smith's Point Analytics has developed a survey that will help mobile vendors better understand the development needs of a mobile programmer.

The results of the developer survey will make up a new section of a report that we are updating that analyzes the market opportunity for HTML5 and cross platform mobile application development tools. The first version of the research was published in March of 2011.

The reason that we are adding a developer survey is to get a better feel for how quickly developers are adopting various tools, technologies and development approaches. Understanding what types of developers are taking various approaches to app development will also be helpful to my clients as they build tools and solutions to meet developers needs. The survey is designed to be unbiased and draw respondents from a variety of objective sources avoiding vendor sponsored developer forums.

The survey instrument is 33 questions long and, as a thank you, we are offering respondents a copy of the executive summary from the report as well as an opportunity to win a free iPad Mini.

The report that results from this project will be marketed to large players in the industry including Motorola, Adobe, Qualcomm, Alcatel-Lucent and others. The document will be broken up into 6 basic sections:

1)      Industry Structure

2)      Market Drivers and Barriers

3)      Market Forecasts

4)      Developer Survey

5)      Vendor Profiles & Competitive Analysis

6)      Conclusions and Recommendations

The data to support the report will not only come from the developer survey but also from past surveys and one-on-one phone interviews with vendors.

The purpose of the document will be to help these vendors be more competitive and bring to market products and services that benefit mobile developers. The industry is quickly becoming very complex providing great opportunity for vendors to create tools and services that make life easier for mobile developers. Understanding not only what the market opportunity is but the needs and backgrounds of developers will enable vendors to not only build the right products but to position them correctly in the market.
