New report reveals a thriving app ecosystem is valued by developers

A major new survey of U.S. app-business leaders shows strong confidence in the app economy and in the tools available for developers. The research, released by the Developers Alliance, found high proportions of respondents reporting that the app ecosystem remains robust, efficient, and supportive of growth.

Survey methods and key findings

The report draws on responses from approximately 1,250 U.S. app-business leaders. According to the findings:

90 % of respondents believe the app ecosystem is strong.

93 % say they are confident in their business’s growth.

94 % report that the ecosystem makes it easy to create and launch apps.

These results indicate that among the population sampled, a large majority of app-business leaders view the infrastructure for mobile application development and distribution as effective and enabling.

Developer experience with major app store platforms

The report also provides insight into how developers evaluate the major app stores — including the Apple App Store and Google Play. Participants reported that:

96 % of the app-business leaders using Apple’s App Store and Google Play say the tools offered by those platforms help them succeed.

93 % say app stores help them find customers.

93 % also report satisfaction with the app stores available.

Half of respondents (50 %) say that publishing apps to more stores would raise their costs.

Together these findings suggest that for many businesses, the existing distribution platforms are effective and that expanding to multiple stores may bring added complexity or cost.

Perspectives from business leaders and experts

In the report, one of the business voices highlighted how smaller firms view the current landscape. For example, Sean Higgins, co-founder and CEO of the app firm BetterYou (an AI-enabled habit-building app), stated:

“Today’s app ecosystem empowers small app-based businesses like mine to grow, innovate, and compete with much larger companies.”
“The app-store system levels the playing field, providing developers with the tools they need to enter the market and reach millions of users.”

An academic perspective also appears in the report. In his foreword, Abraham Song of Pepperdine University commented:

“America’s tech sector is leading the charge when it comes to innovation and developer success.”
“It’s more important than ever for app leaders to advocate for balanced policies that strengthen the current ecosystem rather than undermine it.”

These comments underscore the view that the state of the app ecosystem is an integral component of broader tech innovation.

Policy-related findings and developer priorities

The study further examined policy preferences among app-business leaders. Key findings include:

84 % of respondents say a national data privacy law is preferable to a patchwork of state laws.

72 % believe that overly restrictive regulations of AI-based products would make development harder.

These results show that app-business leaders are paying attention not only to the technical and commercial aspects of their work but also to how regulatory frameworks may shape future opportunities. The report reflects a recognition that next-generation developer tools and application types increasingly rely on artificial intelligence.

Implications for the app ecosystem and innovation

The report’s findings carry several implications:

  • The strong majority views of the ecosystem’s strength suggest that many app-business leaders believe the infrastructure for app creation and distribution is currently functioning well.
  • Satisfaction with large app stores and the high percentage reporting that store tools aid their efforts suggest that the dominant platforms maintain significant influence.
  • The costs associated with publishing across multiple stores, as indicated by half of respondents, may discourage fragmentation and promote continued reliance on major platforms.
  • The regulatory preferences indicate that many leaders favour consistent national frameworks over divergent state-by-state regimes, and they express caution about regulation that could inhibit innovation in AI-based products.
  • The alignment of business leader sentiment with broader tech innovation underscores how the app ecosystem is seen as part of the larger technology sector’s momentum.

Challenges to consider

Despite the broadly positive findings, some caveats remain:

  • The survey reflects the responses of self-identified app-business leaders in the U.S., and may not capture all segments of the market (for example, international developers, very small hobby projects, or nascent firms).
  • While the high percentages are notable, the report does not appear to give fine-grained breakdowns by company size, business model, or specific types of apps — which may mask variation.
  • The cost concern around multiple app stores suggests that while the current platforms are working for many, expanding into additional channels is viewed as non-trivial and may limit distribution choices.
  • The preference for a national privacy law and caution about AI regulation points to potential friction between regulatory aims and developer priorities; navigating that tension may be complex.

New report reveals a thriving app ecosystem is valued by developers

The survey from the Developers Alliance paints a picture of an app ecosystem that a broad majority of app-business leaders view as strong, accessible, and growth-oriented. With high levels of confidence and satisfaction, these leaders endorse the tools and distribution platforms they rely on, while also signalling the importance of stable, consistent regulation. For businesses and policymakers alike, the findings spotlight how the health of the app ecosystem remains a foundational component of broader tech innovation and developer success.
