Tattoos have long been a way for people to mark the moments, memories, and obsessions that define them. Once associated mainly with rebellion or counterculture, tattoos are now fully mainstream.
Video games, meanwhile, have grown up alongside those same generations. What started as simple arcade entertainment has evolved into a $200-billion global industry, shaping childhoods, friendships, and even careers. For many players, games are more than something you play. They’re worlds you live in, stories you return to, and identities you carry with you long after the console is turned off.
It’s no surprise, then, that gaming has become one of the fastest-growing inspirations in tattoo culture. From subtle symbols only fellow fans recognize to full sleeves recreating entire game universes, video game tattoos are increasingly common, and Instagram has become the unofficial gallery for showing them off.
A new study by Streamproject DE shows exactly which games players are committing to permanently, based on Instagram hashtag data tied specifically to tattoo posts.
At the top of the ranking is Pokémon, dominating by an enormous margin with 557,000 Instagram hashtags. Its success is fueled by pure recognizability and emotional attachment. Characters like Pikachu, Eevee, and classic Poké Balls translate effortlessly into tattoo designs, and Pokémon’s bright color palette makes it one of the most versatile franchises for ink. Tattoo artists often note that Pokémon tattoos are among the most requested gaming designs worldwide, especially among millennials who grew up with the franchise in the late 1990s.
Second place belongs to Super Mario with 21,300 hashtags. Mario tattoos lean heavily into nostalgia, with mushrooms, stars, and pixel-style characters frequently chosen for smaller, playful designs. These tattoos often reference early gaming memories, making them popular first tattoos. Close behind in third is Final Fantasy, which earns 19,100 hashtags thanks to its dramatic visuals and emotionally charged storytelling. Iconic weapons like Cloud’s Buster Sword and detailed character portraits are especially popular for large, highly detailed pieces.
Competitive and story-driven titles continue the list. League of Legends ranks fourth with 17,400 hashtags, reflecting its strong esports culture and devoted fan base. Champion symbols, quotes, and character art dominate these tattoos. Kingdom Hearts follows in fifth place with 14,500 hashtags, blending Disney nostalgia with darker RPG themes. Its imagery, especially Keyblades and heart motifs, is often chosen for deeply personal tattoos tied to childhood and emotional growth.
Rounding out the top 10 are franchises known for bold aesthetics and strong identities. God of War takes sixth place with 12,900 hashtags, inspiring large, cinematic tattoos featuring Kratos, Norse runes, and weapons. Animal Crossing lands seventh with 12,300 hashtags, standing out as one of the few cozy games to break into tattoo culture. The Legend of Zelda sits in eighth place with 12,000 hashtags, while Fallout and Sonic the Hedgehog close out the top 10, proving that both post-apocalyptic grit and classic speed-based nostalgia still resonate strongly with tattoo enthusiasts.
