Meta has outlined a bold new direction for artificial intelligence, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiling the company’s vision for “personal superintelligence,” a transformative AI initiative that aims to place the power of superintelligent systems directly into the hands of individuals.
In a recent update, Zuckerberg confirmed that Meta’s AI research teams are now observing the first signs of self-improvement within their systems, a development he describes as slow but undeniable. He noted that the emergence of superintelligence is no longer a theoretical concept, but a rapidly approaching milestone.
“As superintelligence becomes possible, the key question is not if, but how we choose to direct it,” said Zuckerberg. “Our vision is clear, to empower individuals rather than centralize control.”
Meta’s approach contrasts with others in the industry who advocate for superintelligence to automate global productivity and redistribute the benefits broadly through centralized systems. Instead, Meta believes that history has shown progress thrives when people are given tools to pursue their own goals. Just as technological advancement once freed humanity from agrarian labor and enabled modern scientific and cultural achievements, Meta envisions superintelligence unlocking the next wave of personal freedom, creativity, and fulfillment.
Zuckerberg emphasized that personal superintelligence could help individuals:
“True abundance may come from AI,” Zuckerberg said, “but the deeper transformation will be how it helps people grow and do more of what they care about.”
According to Meta, the future of computing will revolve around deeply personalized devices, such as smart glasses, that are fully integrated with AI systems capable of seeing, hearing, and understanding the user’s environment in real-time. These personal assistants will adapt to individual goals and contexts, making productivity tools feel increasingly invisible while enhancing creative and social experiences.
Zuckerberg expects people to rely less on traditional software and more on interactive, ambient technologies that enable richer forms of expression and connection.
While Meta plans to share the benefits of superintelligence broadly, Zuckerberg acknowledged that the technology will bring new safety challenges. He stressed that Meta will apply rigorous safeguards and make careful decisions about open sourcing as systems evolve.
“Building a free society means empowering people,” he stated, “but we must also take responsibility for how we develop and deploy these systems.”
Zuckerberg framed the remainder of the 2020s as a critical window for shaping the trajectory of superintelligence. He reaffirmed Meta’s commitment to leading in this space, not just through research and infrastructure, but by delivering real, usable tools to billions of people globally.
“We have the expertise and resources to build this future,” he concluded. “Meta is all-in on personal superintelligence.”
