Google Expands Beta for the Android Based Brillo Connected Device OS
Wednesday, November 4, 2015
Google is expanding the access for developers to preview its Brillo and Weave solution for building connected devices. In May, Google opened up the Brillo operating system (OS) and Weave communication platform to early access partners and now is extending that availability to more developers as part of an invite program.
Brillo offers a lightweight embedded OS based on Android, core services, a developer kit, and a developer console. Developers can choose from different hardware capabilities and customization options, move from prototype to production, and manage at scale with over the air (OTA) updates, metrics, and crash reporting.
With the Weave communication platform, developers can build interoperable communications directly into devices. Weave offers a messaging service that enables phones and devices to talk to each other locally and remotely through the cloud. The Weave cloud server handles remote communication and access to web connected devices as well provides a set of services to securely set up the device and provide controlled access. Weave is built into Brillo and the Weave libraries can also be used with an existing Linux-based OS. Weave comes with a mobile SDK for iOS and Android.
With the expanded preview, Google is also announcing a Weave compatibility program to ship certified Weave-branded devices as well as a hardware program for silicon vendors to build and sell Brillo-compliant hardware.
