Microsoft and Xamarin Partner to Encourage Development of Native iOS and Android Apps With C# and Visual Studio

Xamarin and Microsoft have established a partnership to help developers write native apps for iOS, Android and Windows in C#. At the heart of the partnership is a technical collaboration to better integrate Xamarin technology with Microsoft developer tools and services.

Through the partnership Portable Class Library (PCL) projects are now fully supported on both iOS and Android, making it easier for C# developers to share code across devices. Developers can now keep common code in a single project, referenceable from any iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows Store project, all within a single solution. PCL project references enable developers to seamlessly step back-and-forth between PCL and platform-specific projects.

As part of the announcement, Xamarin has also released several upgrades to their Visual Studio extensions, as well as support for Visual Studio 2013.

The partnership also introduces special pricing for registered Microsoft Developers on new purchases of Xamarin, an extended 90-day trial, and free training on Xamarin University.
