10 App Favorites for a Sane Thanksgiving

Dale Carr Dale Carr

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we naturally got to thinking about spending time with friends and family this season.  Rather than a bucolic postcard scene of gathered loved ones telling stories by the fireplace, our staff imagined a more modern and realistic version which includes quite a few of us checking our devices and enjoying some quality time with our beloved apps!

So whether you’re stealing a moment for yourself, trying to drown out the sounds of the newborn, or simply avoiding Crazy Uncle Larry, these staff picks for the best Thanksgiving day apps are sure to make the holidays enjoyable and keep you in the thankful spirit.

Twerky Turkey – A holiday clone of the classic Flappy Bird, and since Flappy Bird is gone, this version comes to the rescue at exactly the right time.  (We’ll admit, a few of us also kind of enjoyed Flappy Minaj.  No we didn’t.  Yes we did.)

Angry Birds Star Wars – An updated classic!  It has everything:  epic battles, Rebel Bird spies, evil pig troopers – all set in the legendary Star Wars™ galaxy far, far away!  Star Wars lives within us all.  May the birds be with you.

Free Birds Baby Turkey Trouble – We couldn’t help but fall in love with this sweet game.  Based off the movie FREE BIRDS, (starring Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler), you can help these adorable Tuff Puffs get out of their tree hideout.  All together now:  Awwww….

Thanksgiving Turkey Hunt – We’re not into violent recreation, so this “classy” and “funny” hunting shooting game caught our attention.  Show off your hunting skills and see how many turkeys you can bring home.  And we mean this in the nicest way possible.  Sorry, turkeys.

Duck Hunter – This shooting game separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls.  In this free game, you shoot the ducks and other animals on the screen.  Would you shoot the hiding dog?  Test your instincts as the game picks up speed as you advance.

NFL Mobile – It’s tradition.  Enough said.

Food.com – Get cooking and saving! Food.com's new app puts 500,000 rated and reviewed recipes in your pocket, plus gives you an organized recipe box, a meal-planning tool and instant access to savings at your local grocery stores.

Spotify Music – Spotify is now free on mobile and tablet. Create a custom playlist for Thanksgiving, or choose a ready-made playlist that suits your mood.  And most importantly, dance to beat of your own drum this holiday, and always.

Calorie Counter – With the largest food database of any iOS calorie counter (over 4,000,000 foods), and amazingly fast food and exercise entry, this app will keep Thanksgiving splurges in check!  Enjoy the feast, but keeping track of your intake will help make the holiday feel guilt-free.

TGI Black Friday – Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the anticipation of Black Friday deals.  Get the 2014 Black Friday ad leeks first on your iPhone & iPad. You can make a shopping list, get coupons, price compare + buy Black Friday deals from your phone.  Prepare yourself for the big day.
