Adobe Acquires Aviary’s Mobile Photo Editing SDKs to Add to its Creative Cloud Platform

Adobe has added Aviary’s mobile SDKs (Software Development Kits) to its Creative Cloud mobile offerings. The acquisition of Aviary and the company’s SDKs is part of Adobe’s strategy to make its Creative Cloud a platform that developers utilize to build third-party apps, through Adobe’s new Creative SDK.

Currently under development, Adobe Creative SDK is a software library that enables developers to access Adobe’s creative technologies to build mobile apps and drive new connections between mobile devices and Adobe Creative Cloud desktop applications and services.

Adobe Creative SDK gives third-party developers access to Adobe APIs, previously only available to Adobe’s internal engineering teams. Examples include: browsing files stored in Creative Cloud; extracting elements from PSD files; Adobe’s “Touch Slide” software for straight-line drawing; and cloud image-editing services like Content-Aware Fill and Upright. Adobe Creative SDK is currently being tested by developers and a beta launch is expected in the coming months.

Aviary offers a photo-editing platform that includes a free SDK that provides developers with a customizable photo editor that can be embedded into apps on iOS, Android, Windows and Web (HTML5).

According to Adobe’s Scott Belsky in a recent blog post, “Already, our teams are brainstorming the things that we can accomplish together. We will continue to support and enhance Aviary’s free SDK as part of Adobe’s broader Creative SDK offering. While ensuring no interruption to Aviary’s developer community, we will add additional components and services for developers to incorporate in their apps – such as the ability to save creations to Creative Cloud in Adobe file formats, access Photoshop technology, and connect creativity across devices using the Creative SDK.”
